Advice From Graduating Athletes

A record number of graduating Highlanders participated in fall sports this year. Almost half of the graduating class played basketball, soccer, field hockey, ran, swam and rowed for their final fall season of their high school careers. Many of these athletes have been on teams at BH since  Junior School! Here are some parting words from a few of our graduating athletes.
What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself about being an athlete at Branksome Hall?

  • Have fun and learn from others!
  • As brutal as the dark 7:00 a.m. practices are, cherish every moment with your friends and awesome coaches.
  • Don't be shy to try new sports; you never know what you'll be good at. Also join as many sports as you can to meet new people!
  • Don't let anyone tell you what you won't be able to do.
  • Don’t be afraid to try new things and make mistakes! That’s how you learn and get better
  • I would tell myself not to take school sports as seriously. I think I am a competitive person and often think more about winning than having fun.

As a BH athlete, what lesson(s) did you learn that you will apply to your life beyond BH? What is a highlight of your time as an athlete at BH?

  • Finals of the Senior Basketball Team in Grade 11.
  • Flag Football—the team and coaches created such a culture of community and passion, and it made being on the Lower Field in below 0 weather so worth it.
  • The Field Hockey season, because when I started I had never played before. It was cool to see my development and improvement over the years.
  • Qualifying and racing at the OFSAA Cross Country championships in Grade 10.
  • The highlight of my time as an athlete was being able to bond with people in the grade above and below me through the sport.
  • HOCKEY DAY!
  • Joining the Ultimate Frisbee team for the first time.

As a BH athlete, what lesson(s) did you learn that you will apply to your life beyond BH?

  • Consistency is key, be a team player!
  • The energy you put in dictates what you'll get out of it.
  • Many of the sports I did were individual, however I learned that even though I was competing on my own, I always had a team that surrounded me with support and encouragement.
  • Bonds with teammates are unlike any other relationship, enjoy every moment together, the tough ones and the joyful.
  • I will remember to take risks. It's so important to try new things because it really allows you to create new things you love.
  • I learned that trying new things is always important and will benefit me later on in life.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.

Setting the new standard for girls' education everywhere takes collective action. From all of us.
