Grade 12 Debaters Mare and Maylee a Great Team at Worlds

Seasoned Grade 12 debaters Mare and Maylee attended the 34th World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships, held on April 9 and 10, and brought home some impressive results. Hosted virtually by Country Day School in Newmarket, debaters and public speakers from all over the world tuned in to compete at this well-respected competition.
Earlier this week, Mare and Maylee, along with Debate Coach Grace Nolan, attended the virtual awards ceremonies to learn the results—and they were impressive. Mare came in third in debate at the Grand Finals. For the final placements across the four events, Mare placed 26th in the world and Maylee placed sixth! This was the third year in a row that Maylee has placed in the top 10 in the world.

Because Mare and Maylee are graduating this year, this was the last high school competition they will attend as representing Branksome.

“Sadly, this is the end of the team we fondly nicknamed 'M and M,'” said Ms. Nolan. “They were the most active and dedicated Club Heads we have had in recent years, and they led with humour, compassion and organization. It's fair to say that the coaches and I will miss them!” said Ms. Nolan.

In addition to their leadership, here are their achievements as debaters and public speakers as Senior School students:

Mare
Provincial Bilingual Debate Championships
National French Debate Championships
Senior Nationals Public Speaking
English Speaking Union - National finalist
World Individual Debate and Public Speaking Championships
Nora McRae - Senior Team Trophy winner

Maylee
Junior National Public Speaking Championships
Senior Provincial Debate Championships (twice)
Senior National Debate Championships
World Individual Debate and Public Speaking Championships (three times)
Senior National Public Speaking Championships
Nora McRae - Senior Team Trophy winner

Karrie Weinstock, Head of the Centre for Strategic Leadership and former Deputy Principal, shared Ms. Nolan’s pride and admiration for Mare and Maylee. “Congratulations on these outstanding results! What a spectacular team ‘M and M’ are and huge thanks to our brilliant, supportive coaches. We are filled with pride for Maylee and Mare's accomplishments and for their commitment to developing the next generation of Branksome debaters and public speakers.”

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.

Setting the new standard for girls' education everywhere takes collective action. From all of us.
