Grade 11 French Trip Makes Language Come Alive

When learning a new language, it’s inspiring to see it come alive on stage. Experiential education was definitely the point of an eagerly anticipated excursion when Branksome Hall French teacher Nadia Talaat took her Grade 11 students to the Théâtre Français de Toronto, in collaboration with St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School on December 12.
The group had the opportunity to attend the Théâtre Français de Toronto to watch Les Zinspiré.e.s, a collection of theatre productions created by students and then performed by professionals.

“Our Branksome students applied their French foundations while enjoying the thrilling drama of live theatre,” says Talaat. “The students were able to understand the skit and the plot and also found the scenarios quite relatable.”

The theatre company invites submissions from French students annually. These draft plays are assessed by drama experts. Some are then selected to be refined and professionally produced. On this trip, Branksome DP1 students submitted their plays, hoping to be selected for production next year. The enriching outing concluded with lunch at Le Papillon on Front, where students from both schools ordered their food in French and discussed the productions, adding engagement and camaraderie to the proceedings. “We hope to make this trip a tradition as it is continually hailed as the most enjoyable and educational French excursion,” says Talaat.
