 Meet Our Donors

  Pamela McCLOUGHRY MacLean’42

I was one of about 50 girls from Sherborne School, Dorset, England, who was sent out for safety in 1940 when a great number of people, including my family, thought England might be invaded.

Miss Read, the Headmistress at that time, cut short her holidays to help make arrangements for us before school started. At 15, I was one of the senior girls, and our holidays were organized with the very kind, thoughtful actions of Branksome Hall parents of that time. We had three wonderful placements over the summer.

When classes started, I particularly enjoyed History. When I was given 50 per cent on an examination, I was determined to raise my standards. On my next examinations, I obtained, with much pleasure, first-class honours.

I had varied and vivid wartime years — first, Branksome Hall, next Edinburgh University, and I spent the last year of the war in the service, in India.

I would like to thank Branksome Hall. They helped to give me self-confidence—which is very important to young people—and much more.
