Fantastic Fall

The 2018 fall Athletics season was another slam dunk, with all of our teams celebrating amazing achievements. Hundreds of students participated on our 19 teams, including Basketball, Soccer, Field Hockey, Cross Country Running, Swimming and Rowing.
Many teams advanced to their Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) championships. CISAA highlights included first place for both our Midget Cross Country and Senior Field Hockey teams, while our U13 Basketball, Senior Basketball and U12 Soccer teams all placed second. Also, the Senior Cross Country team were crowned the CISAA overall champs!

For the first time last fall, we added a U14 Soccer team. “Due to a record turn-out for our Soccer teams, this team was added in order to strengthen our program and to provide more opportunities for young athletes to remain active, with a focus on skill development,” said Katie Flynn, Director of Athletics. The new team proved to be a force and placed second at CISAA.

While outstanding accomplishments are a reason to celebrate, being an athlete means so much more than that to our students. “Being an athlete means that before anything you are a teammate and regardless of the sport your team becomes your family,” said Sophia, Sports Prefect. “They are the people that share your pain during challenging times but they also share your love for the sport that makes you keep playing despite those challenges.”

Our Junior School athletes also had a fantastic term and continued to encourage inclusion. “We promote a ‘no-cut’ policy which allows more young athletes to remain involved in sport and an active lifestyle,” said Ms Flynn.

The Rowing team continues to practise over the winter after a successful fall season, with 60 students training five days a week in our Rowing Centre and AWC Fitness Centre.

Other teams this winter include Badminton, Alpine Skiing, Swimming, Volleyball and Hockey. New this season is the introduction of a Squash team, which will compete at the CISAA as an exhibition league for girls for the first time.

Branksome is so proud of what our student athletes have accomplished and look forward to the winter season that is well underway. Go Highlanders!

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.

Setting the new standard for girls' education everywhere takes collective action. From all of us.
