The Power of Student Voice

It has been a month since the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and, during this time, Branksome students have reflected on the tragedy that took 17 lives.
“The bravery and determination of these students to effect change is inspiring,” said Julia Griffith, Service Learning Perfect at assembly. She encouraged students to stand with the survivors of this massacre and end gun violence.

“As students, we often think of ourselves as too young or insignificant to effect real change. The students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas prove that this is not the case,” said Julia.

Students around the world are joining the voices of Marjory Stoneman Douglas students — and it’s resonating powerfully.

“By organizing the March for Our Lives movement, a student-driven movement to end gun violence and mass school shootings, these students have proved the power of student voice,” said Julia.

Thousands of marches will take place around the world from Washington, Tel Aviv, Puerto Rico and Brisbane on Saturday, March 24. Those in the Branksome community will also join the march and walk in solidarity from Toronto City Hall to Queen’s Park.

“This is an opportunity for all of us students to show our support for the survivors and victims of the shooting by using our social media platforms to make a positive impact,” said Julia. “I encourage you to visit the March for Our lives website, follow @AMarch4OurLives on Twitter and hashtag #MarchForOurLives on Instagram.”

“Let their bravery and resilience, following such a devastating tragedy, be an inspiration to us all,” added Julia.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.

Setting the new standard for girls' education everywhere takes collective action. From all of us.
