Namaste

Stretching into Warrior pose, Grade 1 student Kathryn raises her hands above her head, extends one leg behind the other and twists her body to the side. “Yoga makes me feel good and impressed with myself,” Kathryn says. “It’s fun to do and easy!”
Her peers feel the same way as they move through Tree, Child, Cobra and Downward Dog yoga poses. “My favourite pose is Butterfly and Lotus because it’s nice to learn and relaxing,” says Nilmyn, Grade 1 student.

As part of the Grade 1 Unit of Inquiry “Who We Are,” students participated in four yoga classes in Branksome’s yoga studio. The classes were taught by Nora Benian, a yoga instructor with 10 years of experience teaching children. Ms Benian led the girls through various poses, helping them breath, stretch and relax.

“I like the instructor because she’s kind and she teaches us really well,” says Kathryn.

The children worked on balancing, concentrating and focusing. “By exposing Grade 1 students to a variety of wellness experiences, we hope that the girls will begin to see all of the exciting choices they can make to enhance their well-being,” say Jeanette Seymour and Danielle Moore, Grade 1 teachers.

As they rolled up their yoga mats, all the students felt invigorated and motivated. “It was relaxing and I like yoga because you can stretch,” says Victoria, Grade 1 student.

While the Unit of Inquiry may be over, Ms Seymour and Ms Moore plan to continue yoga in their classrooms, much to the delight of their students.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.

Setting the new standard for girls' education everywhere takes collective action. From all of us.
