A Trip of a Lifetime: Grade 9 Students Visit Branksome Hall Asia

On February 24, more than 100 Grade 9 students and their chaperones embarked on the trip of a lifetime when they travelled to Branksome Hall Asia (BHA), our sister school on Jeju Island, South Korea. This visit was the second part of an annual exchange between the two schools.
In October 2022, Grade 9s from Branksome Hall Asia visited Toronto to get to know their Canadian counterparts and participate in exciting workshops in the arts. The two weeks were filled with fun and lots of learning, but the most memorable parts of the trip were the bonds that were built between the students from both schools. By collaborating on projects, sharing ideas and exploring Toronto together, the students created lasting friendships that continued onto Branksome Hall Canada’s trip to Jeju this spring.

After arriving in South Korea, the students received a warm welcome at BHA.The Canadian students reunited with their peers to collaborate on a STEM-themed project exploring sustainable energy and wind turbines. Each team, consisting of students from both Branksomes, designed and built a model wind turbine out of wood, cardboard and plastic gears. When spun, the turbines generated electricity that was then measured and recorded by the students. Seeing their hard work pay off in such an exciting way was a testament to their effort and dedication to working as a team.

When the students weren’t at BHA, they explored all of the wonderful tourist attractions Jeju Island had to offer. They visited markets to try fun foods and buy souvenirs, explored Jeju’s UNESCO World Heritage Site full of volcanic caves and lush greenery, and tried on traditional Korean dresses called Hanbok. There was never a dull moment on this exchange, and it’ll be a trip the students will never forget.

The Branksome Hall community would like to thank the chaperones who guided the students on this journey and Branksome Hall Asia for being wonderful hosts. We look forward to the 11th exchange in the 2023–24 school year.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.

Setting the new standard for girls' education everywhere takes collective action. From all of us.
