Grade 10 Student Wins Silver in Table Tennis at the Pan Am Championships

For Gina, the eight years of table tennis she’s played have really paid off—at the recent Pan American Championships, in November in Lima, Peru, she finished in the silver medal position on the podium.
“Going to the Pan American Championships and traveling to Peru was a wonderful experience,'' said Gina. “I never thought I could get into the finals, so being able to win a silver medal for Canada at this tournament was really unbelievable.”

Gina has recently represented Canada at international championships, like the 2021 Pan American Junior Championships and now, the Pan American Championships.

“I felt honoured to have the chance to meet people from different countries and play against other top-level table tennis players, some of them are even Olympians,” she explained.

Through table tennis, Gina has further developed other useful skills. “My favourite thing about table tennis is its intensity and complexity,” she said. “Table tennis requires high concentration, lots of techniques and thinking because the ball moves so quickly on the table, and there is not much time for me to plan my next move.”

Gina has no intention of stopping with a silver medal. “During the Winter Break, I will be competing at a tournament being held in Las Vegas, USA, and in January, I will be competing at a Canadian National tournament being held in Montreal.”

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.

Setting the new standard for girls' education everywhere takes collective action. From all of us.
