Tremendous results for Branksome students at Canadian Junior High Speech Nationals
Our top debaters didn’t press pause on competition when Branksome Hall went virtual. Grade 9 student Nia earned second place in the interpretive reading category and fourth overall at the Canadian Junior High National Speech Competition, May 16 and 17.
Coming into the competition she was first in the interpretative speaking category and fourth overall in Ontario, having placed well at the provincial competition in February.
The tournament brought together 58 strong competitors who had each qualified as the top public speakers in their provinces.
“The tournament was a riveting experience,” says Nia, who read from Elie Wiezel's Night. “I truly enjoyed preparing and competing. Interpretive reading has always been my favorite category and what I loved the most was the opportunity to hear and learn from a whole host of amazing speakers.”
Her teammates also distinguished themselves. Amyna, who entered the competition having placed sixth in Ontario, placed ninth in interpretive reading and 20th overall. Hao, who came in having placed second in debate and seventh overall, placed eighth in impromptu speaking and 32nd overall.
“I am so proud of Nia and of all the girls; these are indeed outstanding results,” says Deputy Principal Karrie Weinstock. “It is thrilling to see what they have accomplished.” She also praised the instrumental role of coaching, thanks to Emma Taman, Grace Nolan and Owen Williams.

We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.
