Kilometre Club challenges community to ‘walk across Canada’

Ready, set, walk across Canada! That's the goal for four Toronto-area girls' schools, to keep fit and build community during quarantine. Along with Havergal College, St. Clement's School and the Bishop Strachan School—which initially mapped out the plan—Branksome Hall students, family and employees are in the midst of the 7,366-km virtual journey.
“We jumped on board for this collaborative challenge,” says Katie Flynn, Director of Athletics. “It's great to bring 'both sides of the street' together to accomplish the goal involving the physical activity of getting from one side of the country to the other.”

The Kilometre Club Challenge tracks group movement from St. John’s, Nfld. to Tofino, B.C. Participants may run, bike or walk, or even “erg” or scooter. The goal becomes more accessible if one maps out a 100-metre route in the house and completes it 10 times during the day, to reach one kilometre.

“The hope is that students will be inspired to get moving and that it will give them some motivation to stay active, despite not having the on-campus experience of physical activity [right now],” says Flynn.

The Kilometre Club also allows students the flexibility to run and walk at different times of the day, independently or as a family. This is a community-wide challenge, for all students from JK through Grade 12 and all employees. Students are asked to keep track of the kilometres they walk/run by clicking this link.

Watch out for the weekly, collective progress of the Highlanders, Gators, Penguins and Bobcats being updated on our social media channels, in our quest to cross Canada each week.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.

Setting the new standard for girls' education everywhere takes collective action. From all of us.
