Snowstorm Couldn’t Bury Spirit Week

A major winter snowstorm, which shut down most of Toronto last month, couldn’t put a damper on this year’s Spirit Week, as the Senior and Middle School grade-friendly competition showcased Service Learning initiatives, hilarious Grade Cheers and inspired Lip Syncs.
The week kicked off with a Community Engagement event where Grades were asked to create murals representing an Access for All theme. These included shelter, water, accessibility, support for refugees, women’s health and education. Grades were then judged and awarded points on the mural that best represented their theme.

“While there isn’t an overall theme for Spirit Week,” said Student Government Prefect, Samantha, “each Grade tries to incorporate their grade and grade colour into a theme. For example, this year’s Grade 9s based their week around the television show Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”

Unfortunately, the much anticipated “Highlander Pride Hockey Game” against St. Clement’s at Mattamy Arena had to be cancelled due to the winter storm; however, that didn’t hinder the students from returning on Wednesday for a creative Grade cheer.

“The cheer is where grades get to show off their creativity and wit as they perform a Branksome-themed cheer along with carefully rehearsed choreography,” added Sam.

If you missed the cheer, please check it out here.

The week concluded with the popular Lip Sync, where Grades demonstrated impressive dance moves as they lip synced to the Backstreet Boys, Kayne West and Prince, among others. To see all six performances, please click here.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.

Setting the new standard for girls' education everywhere takes collective action. From all of us.
