Junior School Changemakers

“I congratulate everyone in the Junior School—students, staff and parents—on your daily contributions to making this year such a remarkable place to learn and grow every day,” said Amanda Kennedy, Head of the Junior School, at the joyful Junior School Closing Ceremony on June 12, 2019.
Outstanding academic achievements and contributions to the Junior School were highlighted, including special awards in Music, Athletics and Visual Arts. Students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 5 also received promotion certificates, while Grade 6 students received Primary Year Program (PYP) Exhibition pins to signify the end of their PYP journey. “We are so very proud of each and every one of our Grade 6 students for reaching this important milestone,” said Principal Karen Jurjevich. “You have worked so hard and shown such determination, and today we celebrate your success as Junior School leaders.”

As our Grade 6 students get set to move across Mount Pleasant Road to the Middle School, the ceremony was also a time to reflect on the mark they’ve left on the west campus. “In a world where change is happening faster than ever before, you have shown during your time in the Junior School that you are unafraid to try new things,” said Ms Jurjevich. “At the same time, you have shown that you understand the importance of learning from others and accepting help when you need it.”

Our Junior School students also offered their help to others this year through their various action initiatives in support of local and global communities. Ms Kennedy highlighted some examples, including creating handmade goods, crafts and cards to raise funds for important causes, advocating for the removal of invasive species from our woodlot and for the elimination of plastic straws in the dining hall. “You are our future leaders and each of you has exponential human potential,” said Ms Kennedy.

“To each student here today, we believe in you. I look around daily and feel surrounded by girls who are utterly capable of effecting great change, and who are shaping a better world, today,” she said.

Congratulations to all of our Junior School students for another fantastic year and we wish our Grade 6 students a smooth and enjoyable transition to the Middle School in the fall.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.

Setting the new standard for girls' education everywhere takes collective action. From all of us.
