 Transforming the World through Service

A passion for making our shared world a better place motivates Laurie Kuchirka, Geography teacher and Service Learning Coordinator. She encourages the entire Branksome Hall community to see their actions, however small, as crucial to change.

"If we each do something to make a difference in another person's life or in our planet's ability to thrive, together we can make a significant and markedly different future—a future of equity, peace and health for all," Ms Kuchirka says. "Branksome students give their heart and soul to service activities."

Ms Kuchirka is recognized as a leader who exemplifies the commitment to action, based in understanding others' needs, as a catalyst for change. Branksome's Day of Service has helped to embed service learning and teamwork deeply in the school's culture.

"I think of each of us as a water droplet," she says. "By itself, a droplet is small and seemingly powerless. But when those droplets combine and act together, they create the full force of a formidable waterfall that cuts through the hardest of rock. They literally have the power to change the face of the earth."
