 Inspiring a Sense of Community

Kristin Buchanan's favourite quote is from John Quincy Adams: "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader." Ever since she joined Branksome's Junior School as a Physical Education teacher in 1999, Ms Buchanan has served as an inspiring leader through her deep commitment to community and to service learning.

"It's about empowering others," she observes. "I try to live authentically, passionately, and then people want to ride that wave with me."

Ms Buchanan has championed the Terry Fox Run as a model to kick off the year of action every September. "Terry was a truly selfless person who showed how we can make a meaningful life by giving to others," she says.

In June 2013, she helped direct the Junior School's "Girls Glow" talent show. This "very moving, community-building event" became a fundraiser for Sick Kids Hospital, where a Branksome student had been treated for a major brain hemorrhage. In February 2015, "Talent Leads" provided another showcase for Junior School performers.

"I never suspected that directing kids' talent shows would be a highlight of my teaching career," Ms Buchanan reflects. "It lets me flex the creative, musical part of my brain."

This transformational leader adds: "I love the challenge of trying new things. We only have a fixed amount of energy, so we should spend it in a positive way."
