 Sustainability

Going for green!

You’ll find solar panels on our gym roof www.branksome.solarvu.net, recycling and composting bins throughout our campus, and reminders on our light switches about saving energy.

Each year, we hold a “green” fashion show, featuring garments made of recycled or environmentally friendly materials, and each week, we mark Meatless Mondays in our dining hall. These are just a few examples of Branksome Hall’s commitment to sustainability.

In 2008, we created the Branksome Environmental Sustainability Action Plan (BESAP) to help guide our environmental efforts, and we appointed a Sustainability Coordinator from our faculty to help keep us on track. We created a Sustainability Council of senior student representatives, who provide updates to students on our progress, and, in the Junior School, Grade 6 Eco-Leaders promote environmental stewardship. We also involve our foodservices and housekeeping contractors in our commitment to sustainability.

In 2011, both our Junior School and our Senior and Middle School became a Gold-certified Ontario EcoSchool!

We’re always looking for ways to improve and build on our sustainability efforts — through discussions in student advisory meetings, assembly presentations, professional development sessions, special events and presentations from guest experts.
