Students at Branksome study two languages:
- Their strongest language, usually their native language (known as Language A), and
- A second language.
ESL Program
- Branksome offers a range of ESL options for varying levels of English proficiency:
- The Basic ESL Support Program provides specialized ESL classes, tutorial support and help with preparing for the Ontario Grade 10 Literacy Test.
- An optional TOEFL Preparation Course is also available.
Language requirements
- All students must pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) in order to graduate with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
- Branksome Hall has been successful in preparing all our students with the skills necessary to pass the OSSLT. Students write the OSSLT in the spring of their Grade 10 year. A student who enters Branksome Hall in Grade 11 or 12, who has not passed the OSSLT at a previous school, will be required to take, and pass, this test.
- Students who plan to attend university must successfully complete the Grade 12 English course designed as a pre-requisite for university study, known as University Preparation English, ENG 4US
- Students taking the International Languages Program will be charged an additional annual fee.
International languages in your mother tongue (Language A) - Branksome Hall provides language courses for mother tongue speakers in many languages including: Cantonese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and Urdu.
- These language courses all qualify for both the IB Diploma and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program.
