A Future in Politics
“I can see myself in politics in the future,” exclaimed Jasmine, Grade 11 student, after returning from a week in Ottawa, participating in the Forum for Young Canadians.

Jasmine and her classmate Nina attended the forum together, learning about the importance of public affairs, politics and leadership.

While there, the pair toured Parliament Hill, Export Development Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada. They also met the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Clerk and attended a Question Period.

“We were so honored that we were given the opportunity to sit in some of the MPs’ seats, which was a huge privilege!” said Jasmine.

Not only did the students sit in their seats, the forum also ran government simulations where participants acted as Members of Parliament and Ministers. “We have learned a lot more about how the federal government works,” said Jasmine.

The pair were interested in attending the forum because they wanted to “demonstrate our capability as young women and future leaders in society,” said Jasmine. They also both enjoy debating and public speaking at school—a perfect fit with politics. “We often heard that a good politician is usually good at debating and public speaking, so we thought it would be a neat idea to try something new,” said Jasmine.

Since returning from the forum, Jasmine has furthered her interest in politics by volunteering at political events, one of which she met Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at. “It was an unforgettable experience for me.”
