Training every day, being internationally ranked and demonstrating fantastic sportsmanship are just a few of the reasons Grade 11 student and fencer, Linda, is the recipient of our 2017 Fall Athlete of the Season Award.

Linda began fencing when she was 11 years old and is now currently ranked fifth in Canada, seeded eighth in North America and is a member of the Canadian National Team, representing Canada in countries such as Austria, Denmark, Cuba and Bulgaria.

“I feel so honoured because there are so many amazing athletes at Branksome that also deserve this award,” says Linda. “They all work hard to achieve great results and I feel honoured so many people nominated me.”

Branksome’s Athletics Council received over 60 nominations for students in Grades 7-12 who compete in a sport inside or outside of the school. Linda’s skills, effort and commitment to fencing proved she deserved this exemplary recognition.

“Despite [fencing] being an individual sport, Linda is always supportive of both her teammates and opponents and shows great sportsmanship,” read one nomination entry. “She is always working very hard to be the best fencer she can be. She learns from her losses rather than feeling defeated and really inspires me,” read another nomination.

Linda says fencing every day is far from being a chore because she has so much fun doing it! “Fencing as a sport works on every aspect of you,” she says. “It’s not just physical, it’s mental as well because when you’re fencing you have to predict what your opponent’s going to do next by judging their movements.”

Between schoolwork and fencing at multiple clubs, Linda also volunteers her time coaching younger fencers to help improve their skills. She’s also interested in starting a fencing club at Branksome to promote and expose other students to the sport she loves.

Congratulations, Linda — you’re a dedicated and deserving Athlete of the Season!
