Standing Ovation for Honk!
It’s a universal story—being treated differently based on how you look or act. In an exciting, funny and energetic production, Branksome’s Performing Arts Department dove into this subject in Honk!, an adaptation of the fairy tale The Ugly Ducking.

The play takes place on a farm where Ugly, a baby swan, doesn’t fit in with the rest of his brothers and sisters who are all ducklings. Ugly is teased for not only looking different but sounding different too, and saying “honk” instead of “quack.” Ugly then sets off on an adventure and learns it’s great to be different, in fact, that’s what makes each one of us special.

Outstanding actors in Grades 9 to 12 presented the award-winning musical comedy under the direction of Judith Friend, Instructional Leader of Performing Arts. The cast— playing a range of comical and witty barnyard characters—performed three nights to nearly sold-out audiences in the Allison Roach Performing Arts Centre.

Audience members were delighted by the toe-tapping musical numbers that kept everyone entertained, like “Look at Him,” “Different” and “Transformation.” The score was performed by over 20 incredible student musicians in the Honk! band who played various instruments like guitar, drums, piano and flute, led by Scott Harbin, Music Coordinator and Band Teacher.

While the acting, singing and band took centre stage, the costumes, set design, props and lighting were equally beautiful and well done.

Bravo to everyone who played a role on and off the stage—this heartwarming and family-friendly play was a complete success!
