Summer Reading Tips from Librarian Fatma Faraj
Wondering what to read this summer? Let our Junior School Librarian Fatma Faraj inspire you with what's on her summer reading list:

"Part of me still keeps my library hat on in the summer!" says Ms Faraj. "I choose one author from our collection who I think has been overlooked by our students and I read three to five of their books. This summer I've chosen Blue Balliett, who is widely recognized as an important writer in children's literature; she has many diverse characters in her mysteries that weave in some history too."

Through working with our students, Ms Faraj has found that the best way to promote an author is for the library staff to make sure to read their books.

"I tend to choose books if I see them coming up repeatedly in "Best Of" lists. This summer, I'm really looking forward to reading The Underground Railroad, by Colson Whitehead. It won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the 2016 National Book Award for Fiction, the 2017 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence, and was featured in an Oprah Book Club.

"I also like to revisit an oldie-but-a-goodie. I'm planning to leap into historical fiction and reread Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry, also from our collection. It won a Newbery award and is about a Dutch family who bravely protected Jews from the Nazis. I recommended it to a friend's son who read it in two days after almost giving up on it because there was a girl on the cover! In turn, he recommended it to his teacher."

"Every summer I also read a mystery novel. I love the work of John Sandford who comes out with a new mystery every summer."

Thank you Ms Faraj. Happy summer and happy reading!
