Athlete of the Season Makes Hockey Look Easy
For Grade 8 hockey player, Sofia, the winter season couldn't be more remarkable. Our Highlanders hockey team, where Sofia plays back-up goalie, made it all the way to the CISAA semi-finals, where they lost in a double-overtime nail biter. Upon the completion of their successful winter season, Sofia was named athlete of the season for her never-ending can-do attitude, her razor-sharp reflexes and her team-first spirit.
"Sofia's technical game is outstanding," says hockey coach Joe Smith. "She's incredibly comfortable in the net and makes playing goalie look easy."
As well as playing for the Branksome hockey team, Sofia also plays goalie for the AA North York Storm. As one of the youngest members on both teams, Sofia continuously demonstrates persistence, consistent effort and great skill during practices and games. She also regularly trains in the Branksome Hall Fitness Centre.
"Sofia worked so hard and showed a high level of skill this season. She always keeps trying and never gives up," says a teammate. "She is truly inspirational and I look up to her."
Although Sofia was the backup goalie on the Branksome team, she was present and ready to train at every practice and game. Her effort and dedication is evident as Sofia received the most nominations for her athlete-of-the-season award.
"Sofia is someone who has truly gone above and beyond in their athletic pursuits and whose skill, commitment and effort deserve exemplary recognition," adds Bronte, a member of the Athletic council.
