A Plane-Load of Debating Trophies
Three jubilant Branksome debaters made history at the recent International Independent Schools’ Public Speaking Championship (IISPC) held in Vancouver, bringing home four of the top  trophies.

“I am sure you can imagine what we went through trying to get the trophies [in the picture] on the airplane back to Toronto,” said Debating Coach Tracy Dalglish.

Branksome’s seasoned debating team comprises Sonali Amarasekera, Anisah Mahomed and Clare Moffatt, all of whom have already won many debating and public speaking awards.

Proud of the three students’ hard work and accomplishments, Ms Dalglish, said: “The championship was very exciting for our team. All three girls achieved excellence and scored well in all their categories. It was truly a team effort!”

Fifty teams from as far afield as India, Cyprus, the U.S. and U.K. pitted their debating and public speaking skills against each other in this highly competitive annual tournament.

“This year represented an unprecedented achievement for Branksome,” said Ms Dalglish. “We not only won the trophy for the Top Canadian School for the second year in a row, but, for the first time ever, we won the prestigious trophy for the Top School Overall.”

The 166 competitors all aimed to talk their way into one of the coveted top eight spots that would take them to the “Worlds” championship in Australia in April 2012. One of these places went to Branksome’s Anisah Mahommed, and it will be the second time Anisah has had this honour.

Anisah not only qualified for “Worlds,” she was the Top Individual Speaker at the entire tournament and also the Top Canadian Competitor. She won the prestigious marble trophy for her overall standing at the tournament and in addition, she won the Molson Cup for her top Canadian placement.  Further, she was the top Parliamentary Debater at the tournament.

The “Worlds” the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship — will be hosted by Moreton Bay Boys’ College in Brisbane, Australia, from March 29 to April 4, 2012.

Congratulations Sonali, Anisah and Clare.
