Cambridge Conquered by Branksome Duo
The Branksome Junior debating team of Clare Moffatt and Maliha Imami won the ICYD (International Competition for Young Debaters) tournament, which wrapped up May 7 at the University of Cambridge.
The tournament featured 56 teams, representing countries including Canada, South Korea, Ireland, Greece, Scotland, England and Italy.
“It was a big tournament and the competition was formidable,” said Grade 9 student Clare, following her triumph, which was greeted with a standing ovation from the large crowd.
“It seems unbelievable right now that we managed to win the tournament with so many international teams,” added Clare. “I think it's a great win for Branksome Hall and Canada.”
“The tournament was a great success for our Debating Society at Branksome Hall, where, everyday, young women are encouraged to discuss and delve into issues of global, national, provincial and local importance and not shy away from being heard,” said Maliha, who clearly appreciated the gravity of the Cambridge speakers who preceded her.
“The finals were held in the Cambridge Union Chamber, where the likes of Sir Churchill, Roosevelt, the Dalai Lama and Julian Assange orated their views on some of the most pertinent topics of the past and present,” said Maliha. “It was a great honour giving my own address there as well.”
The Branksome duo qualified to attend the prestigious tournament last fall, when they placed first among all of the Junior teams at the McGill University Debating Tournament.
