 Allison Roach Alumna Award

Miranda de PENCIER'87
Miranda de Pencier has had a stellar career in the arts, moving from successful actress to high-powered independent film producer. Last year, Beginners, an acclaimed movie she produced, served up an Academy Award for her friend Christopher Plummer as Best Supporting Actor. Her latest production, Thanks for Sharing, due in September, will star marquee names Mark Ruffalo, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim Robbins and the singer Pink. And recently, she made her directorial debut with a 17-minute short based in the Canadian Arctic, Throat Song, which won a Canadian Screen Award—Canada's equivalent of an Oscar.
As an actress, she played major roles on stage and in movies and television. Since turning to production in the late 1990s, she has teamed up with such A-list Hollywood producers as Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney, and, as they do, she favours movies with substance that can create social change. Her films have tackled such compelling topics as loose nukes, addiction and Asperger's Syndrome (in the award-winning feature Adam), while upcoming projects will deal with poverty and domestic abuse.
Although she spends large amounts of time travelling between Toronto and the U.S., Miranda still finds time to give back. Working with the group CASA of Los Angeles for the last five years, she has acted as a volunteer advocate for foster children in family court.
She feels she developed a strong sense of duty, purpose and responsibility at Branksome. She's especially delighted to be getting an award named for former principal Allison Roach, whom she regards as a mentor and trailblazer.
For her contributions to the arts through film and television, the Branksome Hall Alumnae Association proudly bestows on Miranda de Pencier the Allison Roach Alumna Award.
